Went to the Bronx Zoo today... Naturally it is in the Bronx, NYC and it is walkable (about 20 mins) from where I grew up. We used to go all the time when I was a kid - but it was weird going today as I have not been there in over 20 years, and was also the first time going there via car.
Went with my niece Heather and her boyfriend Derrick, and Heathers dad (and my ex-brother-in-law) and wife Annie... You'd think it would be an awkward mix hanging with my sisters ex and new wife, but it was rather enjoyable..
As many of you know, I've been going up to the Bronx more and more frequently with my Ducky Boys (and later Fordham Baldies) documentaries, so it was part fun, with a hint of research (Theres a Ducky Gang Bronx Zoo story which I'll tease you with here LOL)...
So we went there at 11 (it opens at 10) and it was a warm day - There were times it was hot (News said it was 92 degrees yesterday), but it was manageable yesterday - I guess the humidity was low...
Did a lot there - Tried to hit everything, but we didnt even come close. By the time we got to the Asian Monorail, it was 4pm... And we walked right into an hour wait to get on that, and a 15-20 minute ride...The Zoo closed at 5:30, so EVERYTHING was closed after we got off the monorail. Concession stands, the shuttle to get back to the main gate - We had planned to take the shuttle back, but we had to hoof it... Got to the parking lot around 6...
Overall had a good time - It was crowded, but not TOO crowded, Warm, but not hot, there weren't any annoying people around (which was rare), the people who worked there were quite nice and the animals were (usually) out in the open where you could see them... The Butterfly Exhibit was really cool and I got a lot of great pictures there. See James's pictures of the Bronx Zoo
There were only a few (minor) bad things:
The signage & maps - trying to figure out where we were going was hell - lot of signs that didnt really point to things.
The World of Darkness - It literally is darkness inside...It takes about 10 minutes for your eyes to adjust and ur almost on your way out by then..Its hard to go back because a new batch of people who cant see are herding up.
Shuttles stopping at closing -- I mean it would be so much easier to get people out of the park faster at closing.
The prices for things were ridiculous, BUT I'll let that slide because the concession stands are helping the zoo operate and its like a donation...
But thats the trip in a nutshell - highly recommend you make the trip there if you can! Its clean, safe and easy to get to!
